People With Psychiatric Disorders Children Have Less

A new study in Europe found that people with certain mental health conditions such as schizophrenia and autism tend to have fewer children than the average person in general. These results indicate that disruption is not inherited, but because a new mutation appears in a person, the researchers said.

The researchers studied data on 2.3 million people from Sweden and they found that these people had an average of 1.76 number of children. However, men who have psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia or autism, on average only about one-quarter had children alone, and women with the same condition have a number of children an average of about half of the average person in general.

Men and women with bipolar disorder, anorexia nervosa or substance abuse disorder also have fewer children than the average person in general, and men with depressive disorders showed a slight decrease in the number of children. (Woman with depressive disorders have a number of children the same as in the general.)

"The main message of our study is that it illustrates that suffer from mental illness affects the number of children a person has, especially for men," said researcher Robert Power, of the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London.

For this study, the researchers collected data on people born in Sweden between 1950 and 1970. They saw how many children they have, and diagnose mental health conditions. The researchers also saw the number of children born from their siblings.

From these findings, among those who have a mental health disorder condition, the men experienced a major decline in the number of children than women. It is indeed not surprising, the researchers said. Women tend to "voters" than men in choosing a partner, so that women would be less likely to have boys who have this condition.

In the study, people with autism and schizophrenia tend to have the fewest children. This suggests that the disorder is maintained by a new mutation.
